Frequently Asked Questions
What is a neurotransmitter and how does it work?
Neurotransmitters are peptides or proteins that can communicate a message between nerve endings or between a nerve and a muscle. Some excite and some inhibit the target tissue, but all must be produced and released in proper amounts in order for us to function well. Stress, genetics, and even nutritional deficiencies can upset this delicate balance and cause symptoms.
What neurotransmitters are involved in learning?
Acetycholine is responsible for memory, but Glutamine and Norepinephrine are required for brain energy, while serotonin is needed for mood balancing and concentration.
What is GI stress?
GI stress is caused by other stressors on the body. Sympathetic nervous tone (fight or flight) can alter GI function. But what we choose to eat and drink can also alter out GI tract cellular fuction. Wheat (gluten) and Dairy can upset our delicate gut biofilm (natural bacteria population) and this can trigger an immune response which creates an imbalance in our brain chemistry. So alterations in our gut have far reaching effects on our mood, energy, and even weight gain.
How do I get tested for leaky gut?
Leaky gut is best tested with a stool analysis which looks for presence of good bacteria in comparison to bad bacteria, and parasites that can increase inflammation and make the gut “leaky” or overly permeable.
